First book
Jan. 24th, 2005 01:02 pm*drum roll*
I have now finished my first book of the Read-50-books-this-year plan.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was even funnier than the movie, and I love the movie. I typically enjoy Fannie Flagg's sense of humor.
Where one should not read this book: waiting for or on public transportation. Although one of the main points of the book is that racism = bad, many of the characters do use a lot of racist language that just seems to jump off the page, especially if you're reading a large print version. Of course, nobody even seemed to notice, but my surroundings often made the atrocity of the individual stories more acutely vivid, which was ok, but more distracting than if I was just reading at home, without possibility that someone would glance over my shoulder and make a snap judgment. This is probably also an effect of the dean at one of my schools urging us to "read responsible books" while we're at school. Apparently, it's not proper for educators to read anything other than deep, meaningful prose in the presence of students. God forbid that we give the impression that reading can be fun. But I digress.
Probably not a book that everyone would enjoy, but I liked it. I give it 7 out of 10.
