Almost a life
Nov. 10th, 2003 07:42 amI had almost-a-life this weekend. On Friday, I went to see a friend's friend play at a coffeehouse right off campus. Before we went, I was skeptical, because this coffeehouse does not have a reputation for drawing great musicians. In fact, they have a reputation for giving voice to people who should not be allowed out of their own garages (nugget of wisdom - if they can't get booked anywhere else, especially in Denton, there's probably a very, very good reason). I was also skeptical because this coffeehouse also does not have a reputation for serving good coffee, but I was trying to remain positive. I told Bock on the way that it would be really cool if we got there and the coffee was fresh and the singer was Ani DeFranco.
Well, the coffee wasn't fresh, and the singer wasn't Ani DeFranco, but I kinda liked her more. She actually is a part of the same Antifolk community that AD came out of (http://www.antifolkonline.com/). Her name is Jenn Lindsay. If you like folksy music (because she's not actually anti-folk music but rather anti-mainstream folk community - if there is such a thing...), I highly recommend checking her out - http://www.jennlindsay.com
The person she was touring with - Phoebe Kreutz - was cool, too. Her first song was called You're dumber than I thought. I knew I'd like her when the first line of the chorus was "I'm sorry I called you a dumbass." Good stuff. She also has a song about being in love with the new guy at Taco Bell (tee hee!).
After they played, we hung out for a while at the house. Jenn is uber-talented. When I'm not scraping together pennies to make the car payment, I'm picking up both their CD's.
Last night, we had a potluck. Apparently, the theme for the evening was pasta, cheese and bread. I don't feel so good this morning. Ugh. But I made them fill out personality profiles and played teacher. You know, because I just don't get to do that enough during the week. *sigh* I have to learn to use my powers for good and not evil.
