Business and Pleasure
Feb. 2nd, 2006 04:56 amAs per the promise when I made the resolutions, here is my end-of-the-month progress report on all three accounts:
1. Running: Having suffered a minor setback with The Illness *hacks up lung, as if on cue* I am still hovering steadily between 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile. Not quite where I wanted to be by now, but I'm running three times a week with Cheryl and Liz, so I'm developing a habit. Or I will be, once I get back on track Friday - we just started last week, so I've missed more days than I've made, on account of the sickness.
2. Books: Four down, forty-six to go.
a. The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning - Great work on grace - not just for others but for self. He talked a lot about the paradox that is in humanity. This was my favorite related quote: "Aristotle says I am a rational animal; I say I am an angel with an incredible capacity for beer."
b. Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris - Tee hee! So funny! I could quote my favorite lines, but I'd have to just quote the whole book. Adam was particularly glad when I finished reading this one, because every time I read something that amused me, I read it aloud to him. So basically, I read him most of the book. He should be grateful; I saved him the trouble of reading it himself.
c. Blue Like Jazz: Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality by Donald Miller - We had book group over this last Thursday, so I re-read it. It's still one of my favorite books. A few random quotes:
"I talk about love, forgiveness, social justice. I rage against American materialism in the name of altruism, but have I even controlled my own heart?"
"Christian spirituality was not a children's story. It wasn't cute or neat. It was mystical and odd and clean, and it was reaching into dirty. There was wonder in it and enchantment."
"We would eat chocolates and smoke cigarettes and read the Bible, which is the only way to do it, if you ask me...I always thought the Bible was more of a salad thing, you know, but it isn't. It is a chocolate thing."
"...how freeing that was, to realize that if I met Jesus, He would like me."
"Can you imagine if Christians actually believed that God was trying to rescue us from the pit of our own self-addiction? Can you imagine? Can you imagine what Americans would do if they understood over half the world was living in poverty? Do you think they would change the way they live, the products they purchase, and the politicians they elect? If we believed the right things, the true things, there wouldn't be very many problems on earth."
"I like watching religious television every once in a while. It's better than Comedy Central."
"I think if you like somebody you have to tell them. It might be embarrassing to say it, but you will never regret stepping up. I know from personal experience, however, that you should not keep telling a girl that you like her after she tells you she isn't into it. You should not keep riding your bike by her house either."
"Too much of our time is spent trying to chart God on a grid, and too little is spent allowing our hearts to feel awe."
"I think the most important thing that happens within Christian spirituality is when a person falls in love with Jesus."
d. Flipped by Wendelin van Draanen - So funny. It's a story written from the points of view of two teenagers, looking back over the time when they first met each other up in second grade until the present. I snagged it from Jeff after reading the back cover - that was all it took:
"Bryce: My mom didn't understand why it was so awful that 'that cute little girl' had held my hand. She thought I should be friends with her. 'You like soccer. Why don't you go out there and kick the ball around?' Because I didn't want to be kicked around, that's why. And although I couldn't say it like that at the time, I still had enough sense at age seven and a half to know that Julianna Baker was dangerous.
Julianna: What did a kiss feel like anyway? Somehow I knew it wouldn't be like the one I got from Mom or Dad at bedtime. The same species, maybe, but a radically different beast. Like a wolf and a whippet. Only science would put them on the same tree. Looking back, I like to think it was at least partly scientific curiosity that made me chase after that kiss, but it was probably more those blue eyes."
3. Car: Only about eight more payments to go! Yay!

SEVEN SONGS: In your LJ, list seven songs you are into right now; no matter the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good. They must be songs you're really enjoying this week. When you're done, tag seven people on your friends list to see what they're listening to.
1. Just the Way You Are - Diana Krall's version
2. Open Skies - David Crowder Band
3. My Glorious - Delirious
4. On the Bound - Fiona Apple
5. Joyful Girl - Ani DeFranco
6. So Alive - Love and Rockets
7. Indefinitely - Old 97's
Because I'm lazy - if you haven't done it...*tags you*
And last, but not least, Gilmore Girls this week:
Tee hee! Best Friday night dinner ever. That was fantastic.
This week's reasons for my Revitalized Logan Love:
Exhibit A: He hangs out at the coffee cart, coffee in hand, waiting just to give it to her as she walks by. I gotta pick me up one of those.
Exhibit B: Heh - "Louis Armstrong should be warbling as we talk."
Exhibit C: He helped her get the paper out. They make a good team, at least work-wise. [aside: speaking of the paper, where's Doyle this week? Trouble in paradise? Is that why Paris is so...Paris?]
Exhibit D: "You really did only like me for my looks." Heh.
Exhibit E: The comebacks! "You saved my ass." "Infinitely worth saving."
He's adorable. *pets him*
Quotable Gilmore:
Random newspaper fellow - "She's the kind of dictator they don't just like to kill. She's the kind they like to drag through the streets and hang from a lamppost for a month and a half."
Lorelei - "He's totally fine having his personal freedom slowly stripped away as long as he's completely unaware that it's happening, just like a true American."
