Reader's Digest version: I'm pleased with the way the progressive dinner Friday night turned out. New Year's Day was spent at Six Flags. I got to watch hockey. Someone I know is having a baby (yay!).
Thank you,
aelita, for the chocolate covered cherry liqueur candy. Mmmm....when they said "liqueur," they meant it. Excellent.

First off, let me just say that Alton Brown's veggie wontons = heaven. I spiced them up a little more than he did and left out the tofu (I'm trying to get the herd to eat more veggie options, but they're just not up to tofu yet. I could have tried to sneak it in, and most of them would never have known, but oh well. Baby steps.), but wow. And wontons? Easiest food to prepare ever. I wish I'd known sooner.
We had a good crowd - about 18 people came. We hosts seemed to forget that we were not the only stop, because there was a terrific amount of food. I may be eating chips and dip for dinner all week. Or maybe I'll bring it to the students tomorrow. Must assess my excess. The shining moment of the evening was when Alexis (who is about 15 months old) showed us her dancing penguin that she got for Christmas and danced along with it. Sooooo cute. I was undone. Cannot...move...child...too...cute... (hee...Dana Carvey...)
After the dinner, a few couples (Fran and Felipe, Scott and Sarah, Karla and Chris), Beth, Kim, Tammy, Michelle, Kim (different Kim), and I went back to my house for drinks. We watched part of the New Years Eve thing with Ashlee Simpson (who, btw, is a South Park character waiting to happen), but there's only so much of that we could stand. We also watched Whose Line is it Anyway. Do we know how to party or what?
Question: The name represents the six countries that have ruled Texas in history, but I know that they have Six Flags partners in other states. Do they call them "Six Flags" there, and, if so, do they call them Six Flags over Texas (even though it's in another state) or by another name? People were wondering, and I didn't have a good answer. Just curious.
We spent New Years Day at Six Flags. Now, I'm not a fan of amusement parks in general, but a) it was free, and b) Chris and Karla bribed me with going to Cheddars afterward, so I succumbed to the pressure. It was actually pretty fun. Totally ruined me on ever visiting during the summer again. No heat (so the smells of all the food didn't sicken me), nice breeze, shorter lines - yep, Holiday in the Park is the way to go. My feet, however, were not amused by all the walking and standing. I think I heard them scream, "It's our day off - what the hell are you doing?!?"
A lot of the rides were closed, and none of the shows were running any more, so there was not a wide selection to choose from. However, Runaway Mountain (the inside roller coaster where you can't see where you're going), which is my favorite, was open, and we rode it twice. We also "rode" the Sponge Bob Square Pants ride (basically, sitting in a moving chair while watching a cartoon). I am still having dreams of Sponge Bob singing What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor? at night.
There was a sad moment where Scott lost his cell phone on the Titan. None of us knew that putting something in the pocket of your jeans didn't count as securing it. We tried looking for it, but decided that, even if we did find it, it was probably not functional after plummeting 60 feet to the ground.
We had dinner at Cheddar's with The Slowest Waiter Ever. It was good, otherwise. mmmm.....Cookie Monster...
When I got home that night, I was channel surfing and ended up on ESPN (I'm still not sure how that happened), where they were showing the World Junior Hockey Tournament, so I got to watch USA defeat Sweden 8-2. I was way excited. I didn't recognize any players, but my withdrawal from hockey is so great that I didn't care. I cheered like a fool. I watched part of the USA/Russia game last night, but we lost, so we'll play the Czechs for the bronze and Canada will play Russia for the gold tomorrow. I'll be in class when the bronze game starts, but I'll at least get to see the outcome. And I'll get to root for Canada all the way through tomorrow night!
I hope the NHL gets things worked out so that we can at least have a half-season. That would be super. I think that that should be their New Years Resolution.
*drum rolls* Margarett's pregnant again! I'm very excited. It wasn't planned, so I think I'm more excited than she is right now. Yay! Micah gets a brother or sister!
Everyone's having babies. *head spins* Josiah was born in November, my cousin and his wife had Lance in December, Sharon and Josh are having a boy later this month,
nonnierms is having kumquat (that's about the size of the baby right now) baby in July, and now Margat in August/September. So many children, so little income to spoil them with (not that that's stopped me thus far).
So there you have it. Hope all of you are having a great new year so far!
Thank you,

Date: 2005-01-03 07:04 pm (UTC)1st: dinner sounds great
2nd: Six Flags. I never knew that bit of trivia. Um in St. Louis it's called Six Flags over Mid America. Now if in fact there have been six flags governing St. Louis...::shrug:: I dunno. And doesn't that kinda limit the franchise that they can only go places with the history of only six entities? again I ::shrug::
3rd: Hockey? meh...hey did you see The Other Michael plays Hockey with The Sexy??? LOL
4th: Micah's baby sibling!! YAY!! ::plots:: you will of course come to visit when new baby is born...right?

Date: 2005-01-03 08:34 pm (UTC)2. That's funny about the one in St. Louis. I guess by calling it SF over Mid America, they can be vague and actually justify the original meaning, because I'm sure at least 6 flags have flown over the very vague region of mid-America. It would make more sense if they just renamed it. I'm oddly intrigued by this...maybe a little too much.
3. I did notice but alas, I have not seen the Michaels play hockey. I think I heard that somewhere... ;)
4. Yay!!! I'm trying to come out there sooner, because I talked to Margat yesterday, and I just gotsta get out there and see all of you. We're trying to get her mother-in-law to pay for my ticket so that I can visit, since she asks about when I'm coming every time she sees them. Jeff's mom loves me, so maybe she'll fund my westward excursion. Or maybe some day I'll just jump in the car and show up delirious on your doorstep.
