1. Pay attention to signs. For example, if your instructor sacrifices an hour and a half of her precious lecture time to give you a chance to start reviewing for your exam, this should be a sign unto you that you will need at least an hour and a half to even begin to prepare adequately for said exam.

2. "Challenging" is not the same as "unfair." In fact, at the college level, if your professors do not challenge you, shame on them - they are doing you a disservice.

3. Do not allow a lack of confidence or any other negative emotion to rob you of your focus, causing you to perform below your capability.

4. Although there is something to be said for the adage "it is better to have tried and failed than to have failed to try," you know when you have no idea what you are talking about. At times like these, it is best to just shut the hell up.

[side rant] I think I'm going to start taking additional points off for bullshit. Seriously, what are they thinking? That I'm going to give them extra points for creativity (of course, they would actually have to be creative for that to work)? That I have nothing better to do with my time than waste it reading the mindless drivel of some schmuck who's too lazy to put forth real effort? Let's try putting all that time and energy that they spend trying to be clever into - hey, here's a crazy idea - actually studying. [end rant]

5. Always keep in mind The Big Picture. Regardless of how abysmally you perform on the first exam, there is still plenty of time for grade redemption. It is not the end of the world. To freak out and behave as if it is the end of the world is not only pointless but highly annoying. Contrary to popular belief, the world will keep turning quite nicely even after it discovers that you are not perfect.
